unable to load xp even from safe mode

May 3, 2011 at 07:15:29
Specs: xp
After my system closed unexpectedly I have been unable to restart XP even from safe mode or from a recent version that worked.

I can try re-installing Xp but have been told that I will lose all data on my hard drives, which I don't want to happen. I have loads of files for websites and databases info that can't be replaced.

It's possible to do a repair of the xp operating system in many instances provided the hard drive is not the culprit., you would not lose data this way. You need to download the diagnostic utility from the manufacturer of the hard drive (seagate, Western Digital, etc), make a bootable CD from the utility, then boot to the cd and test the hard drive. there is no point in trying to fix things if the hard drive is dying. If it is, then you need to save the data, either to an external unit or putting your hard drive in a working unit. If the hard drive is ok, then it may be repairable. Could be a few things, but that's a start.

OK, what were you doing when this happened? And what appears on the screen when you try Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration?

"I have loads of files for websites and databases info that can't be replaced."

Then why on earth aren't you backing up your data if it's so important? It's a fact of life that hard drives do go bad.
