Unable to install legal Windows xp over pirated windows 7

Specs: Windows 7
bought pc from students at U.N.TX with illegal win 7 (didn't know it at time) - can't afford to buy 7 and have xp Pro - trying to uninstall 7 and fresh install xp pro from CD, as said, msg. says can't because win 7 is newer - can anyone tell me how to do this - don't have choice about paying for win 7; also win 7 doesn't have driver for my firewire 800 card on ASUS mobo and XP does - computer is to edit video from Panasonic digital video cam using mini dv tapes and burn to dvd - only reason for buying this computer plus my video editing software isn't compatible with win 7, so really need to use xp- thnx

You can't install XP over Win7, you have to completely wipe the hard drive & start from scratch. But before you do, make sure you can get all the necessary XP compatible drivers for your hardware. And also make sure you know how to install XP on a SATA hard drive because it is a bit tricky:

When you boot to the windows xp disk it gives you an option to delete the partition. You delete them and then install xp.

This assumes that xp supports the system. A newish system would have to have sp3 slip streamed in and usually some drivers added in to a new cd to use to install.

There is a chance that the original recovery data is on the hard drive or you might be able to purchase the media for a small fee from the company that made it. I would be suspicious however, the thing may be stolen.
