Uh Oh OS and NTFS on same partition

April 13, 2011 at 08:59:03
Specs: Windows XP Media Center, Dual Core: 2.00ghz/2.00ghz
So.......Can't figure out how to format drive. I thought just a clean install of XP PRO would fix everything BUT there are two partitions, one has the OS AND the system files NTFS the other has 8mg of nothing. Why would someone do that?? Should I create a new partition with just NTFS? I can't delete the existing one and the 8mg one is empty. There are two instances of Win XP PRO/Media Center OS, one in the Windows folder, the other in a folder named KEITH2. Can't get rid of either one and trust me I have tried. I need a healthy work around to get things to normal. Any suggestions?

Jann with more time than anything but NOT for this!

Not sure what you mean by mg. Do you mean MB or GB?

The OS and the system files are the same thing.
Maybe the smaller(?) partition was for personal files (docs etc).

Please come back and let us know how you got on.

8MB is the begining of the hard disk, you can't do anything about it. Its normal.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

I mean MB. Sometimes my fingers type faster than my brain thinks and I was getting soooooo frustrated with this mess that I am surprised I didn't put just M. At any rate, I did it DEREK you are a prince among men!! On thing about that system files thing, I have never formated an XP hd and have been used to a partition with NTFS on its own partition, back when the command was format C:\ /s.

Clive! I didn't know that! Thank you very much!

Heaven forbid anything should run amok on my machine!! I have a Mac Mini with Win XP Pro on one partition and Mac OS on another. One day I will get brave enough to make it a total Win machine, not to fond of the Mac Os.

Jann (please don't hurt me)

Hey, lovely comment but somehow I don't think I'm your prince LOL. My input was minimal, so perhaps you meant "Chuck 2".

Is your machine OK now?

Please come back and let us know how you got on.

Not quite just yet! I have to install SP2 (which reminds me, my system has SP3 for my XP PRO. Should there be one for that one?) I also have to find and install the update to the Media Center, the CD he sent can't find SRclient.dll but I have the download to put on a disk.

You are all Princes!! You all could have yelled a me!! Gotta wake up and get to gettin' on getting that box done and OUT of my life.
