trying to sort out pc after windows recovery

May 14, 2011 at 07:40:13
Specs: Windows xp
I downloaded malwarebytes to remove the "windows recovery virus" and it seemed to work.
Have been trying to now de frag, but it is stopping with the message
"The scan has been canceled because an error occured in file C:\Documents and settings\user\localsettings\Temp internet files\content.IE5\INDEX.DAT
can anyone help me please ?

Why are you using IE5 instead of a newer version? IE5 is no longer supported so that may be a problem.

If you still have temp files then perhaps Malwarebytes settings di not include removing those items.

Download and run Ccleaner Slim and run the cleaner module. Get it at the link below.

Its IE5 as its a friends pc and they dont carry out very much housekeeping or updating.
I followed the steps on bleepingcomputer.com :o)
It was a really helpful and easy to follow guide, thought it was all better now, so decided it could do with a de frag.
I will download and run Ccleaner Slim and run the cleaner module, thanks for your very fast helpful responses, will get back and let you know how it goes.
Thanks

Try running things in Windows Safe Mode by hitting F8 at start up.

How much free space is left on the Windows partition? Defrag needs at least 15% to run.

The C drive has used space 18.4 GB free space 6.83GB ( not sure if thats what you meant about windows partition?)
Many thanks

Try Defraggler-Slim, from the makers of CCleaner. Last one on this page:

That is what I meant. Also, you could try using the registry cleaner module in Ccleaner. I suggest you allow Ccleaner to save the changes even though I have never had a problem with removing anything it has found. That may clear up the the problem.

Thanks for that link, I ran defrag last night, it took about 7 hours!!
My next problem is when I go to system tools there is nothing there.
I managed to find restore from the run command, tried to restore when i was first on this comp trying to get rid of windows recovery, but it failed.
Just thought I would like to create a restore point now that Im rid of that virus.
Thanks
