Trying to reinstall, process keeps restarting

Specs: N/A
I have been trying to format my Gateway
laptop, and the system reinstall windows xp
disc that came win the computer is not doing
anything- does not access any menu upon
startup. My brother advised me to use mymoms
burned copy of windows xpwnixh she gas
reformated many times with success.
In the disc menu, I first selected to reformat the
c drive using nfts(?) quick. It completed but
rebooted right back into my old settings, and
the d drive had been wiped clean. So I selected
reformat d drive with regular (not quick) nfts and
the cd went through the while installation
process, only upon rebooting to take me right
back to the jnstallation process. Tried formating
c drive again regular not quick- same thing. In
about 5 attempts at the installation process, half
the time a screen comes up saying a problem
has been detected and windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to the system.

What the heck is going on? How can k finish
the installation process? I cannot afford new
hardware, especially considering the disc that
came win my computer was a write off.

ok, my brother had a legit copy which finally allowed the
reformat to happen. Now, my wireless adapter has gone MIA.
It's internal, came pre-installed in the laptop, but it's not being
detected at all. Think this should be posted as a separate
