Specs: Windows Vista, AMD Sempron processor LE-1300 2.3 ghz 2 gigs of ram
my friend needs to remove vista home basic from her HP a6700z PC n wants to install XP pro.. how does she go about wiping the HD via the del-tree command and be able to keep her CD drive for the installation of XP pro... we need step-by-step instructions, please...

You boot from the Windows XP CD and delete the partition that contains the Vista instillation. The using the tools within the XP CD, recreate the partition and install Windows XP. Once you have booted the XP CD you just need to follow the on-screen instructions.

Before you do that though you need to check that there are Windows XP drivers available for the hardware. If the computer came with Windows Vista there is the possibility that there are no drivers available for Windows XP.

You dont wipe a hard dsik with any kind of delete command as there will be hidden and system files that will be missed.

The system has a SATA hard drive.

XP doesn't support SATA out of the box, so you will have to use one of the following methods to get XP to install:

Also, you should download ALL the necessary drivers in advance & copy them to a disk or USB jumpdrive. HP doesn't list any XP drivers for that system, so you're going to have to hunt them down individually. You have a fair amount of work ahead of you, make sure you do ALL the prep work before wiping out Vista.
