If you are using Windows XP you cannot upgrade to IE9 because it is not compatible with Windows XP.

IE9 is only for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008.

IE8 is getting very rickety on XP. My advice is to keep it in place as default browser, as it's used for Windows Updates and maybe other MSdownloads. Install Firefox and use that instead as your general browser. That's what I did and I never looked back.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Even if Firefox is set as the default browser rather than Internet Explorer, IE will open instead of Firefox when clicking Microsoft/Windows Update. Furthermore, I've used one of those IEtab add-ons (I think it was IE Tab v2) for Firefox and downloaded my XP updates exclusively in FF for months.

Apologies if I don't respond to your reply immediately. I don't check this site daily, but you're welcome to PM me as a reminder.

"I tried about 20 times to upgrade from IE8 to IE9"

Then about 20 times you received an error telling you it's not supported.

Re #3

Yes, the reason I suggested keeping IE as default is because any home produced shortcut to Windows update, MS Update Catalog or saved webpages will work with IE rather than Firefox. It's not a big issue though, just my preference, and I wasn't aware of the FF addon.
