toshiba with xp will not start in any mode

Toshiba / A15-s129

Specs: Windows XP, 2.4mgz/1 gig ram
All of the sudden my Toshiba Satalite will not start up. I had to replace the hard drive about a year ago but a friend put xp on it and it used to run fine. Then one morning i tried to start it up and it went to the black screen prompting to start in safe, normal, last know good point, etc. mode. I tried them all but they all just revert back to the original screen. At one point it went to blue screen saying dumping info but i turned it off quickly. My friend may have been using the web the night before but it has adaware and anti virus on it. Please tell me it did not delete my hard drive and how can i get it to boot from another way. if i push F8 it will go to that screen but I don't know what to do from there. I asked staples if they could fix but they want lots of money with no promise they can help. Please anyone got a suggestion

try removing the battery physically and just using the AC adapter...see if it boots up.

Removing the battery won't do much, if anything.

"... it went to the black screen prompting to start in safe, normal, last know good point, etc."

If you get this message the hard disk is intact and still has Windows on it.

If it won't boot into Safe Mode for troubleshooting, you'll most likely have to load Disk #1 of the Toshiba install disks, restart the machine and reinstall the operating system. This measure will wipe the hard disk and load "Factory Settings/Programs".

It's a good day when you learn something

'Removing the battery won't do much, if anything.'

In all my years repairing PC's, YES removing the battery makes a difference. If the battery is bad, it will stop the notebook from booting up.
