Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3, 1.662 GHz / 1527 MB
For one of my other laptops, I have a genuine Windows XP serial given under it. But when I bought the laptop it came with a Windows XP Service Pack 2 edition. Now I want to format the laptop but do not have my old Windows XP cd. An image download of the same is available in the Microsoft website but it is of Service Pack 3. I want to know whether the Service Pack 2 serial will work once I format and install Service Pack 3 in my laptop, or whether I have to download SP2 and then update it.

I think you'll find that what you can download from Microsoft is only the service pack, not the whole OS - you still need an XP CD to do a reinstall. The serial number will work with slipstreamed SP3 as well as SP2.

No, that's just the service pack, not the whole OS - honest. Microsoft don't give away their software, even the older stuff.....

As you have the CoA on the base of the laptop there's nothing to stop you borrowing a copy of XP and using that, just make sure it's the full version and not just a recovery disk.

Also keep in mind that what you borrow needs to match what you have.
If you are running Windows XP Pro OEM is what you need to borrow.
Or if you are running Windows XP Home OEM it will need to be the same.
If it is Windows XP Media Center OEM the same applies.
You can't use a Retail Full version inplace of an OEM version.
Also you can't use an upgrade version either.

As long as it matches what you have, it doesn't matter which Service Pack
you slipstream into it it will work with your Product Key on the bottom of your
laptop.

Just get the right install cd.....install....then update your computer using the express mode.......from microsoft.

In the time you download sp3, then slip stream and burn it to a cd then still be in need of any updates you could just let microsoft do all the updating while you have a beer.

If you wish, post back what brand of computer and the color of the coa.
and if it is home, pro ,retail or refurbished.....DO NOT post the keys!

Hey thanks all I borrowed a Windows XP SP3 disc and managed to format and install it with my SP2 serial. Now I want to know...I made a huge mistake. I had original Microsoft Office 2003 installed but forgot about it before I formatted! Any way for me to get it back??

No, impossible to recover once formatted - again, if you have the licence sticker for it you can see if anyone has a disk you can borrow, otherwise OpenOffice is a good, free alternative.
