Text file characters got replaced with spaces

Specs: Windows XP SP3, Core2Duo T7300 2GHz / 2 GB
Please help !! I copied a text file (e.g. sample.txt) to a USB drive and removed it from my laptop hard drive. A couple of days later, I tried to open sample.txt from the USB drive using Notepad. The size of the file and the date is the same, but the file only has spaces! All the text is gone.

Is there any hope of recovery? I copied hundreds of files to the USB stick, but this behavior of disappearing txt happened with only about 4 files. I cannot afford to lose the contents, so any help is appreciated.

You know Flash drive will fail after a certain number of writes (Around 10000). They are temporary like floppies. Sounds like yours has reached the end of its life.

To get the file back go into your Recycle Bin and undelete it.

Thanks for the reply ace_omega. I wish I had the original in the recycle bin. I had done a shift-del when I removed from the laptop hard drive.

More update. I find that all files created after 12/3/10 have this issue. TXT files are blanked out. JPG, XLS and PDFs no longer open and give invalid format errors. There are no issues opening any kind of file created before 12/30/10.

I doubt you will be able to retrieve the lost ones. It could have reached the end of it's life (as already given) or have been caused by a glitch. Whatever, I would copy the good ones off the drive in case they go too.

If you empty the drive by reformatting it, it might well store new files again. Whether you can rely on it any more is a different matter.

It is always best to have important files on more than one device. Any type of drive can fail without warning and flash drives are not really intended for backup storage, although they are improving.

We all live on a ball.
