Specs: Windows XP
I bought some memorex DVD-R 16x 4.7GB 120 min blank disks, because someone recommended them, I have an old laptop with teac dw 224e in it, doesn't have problems with other disks, when I try to burn a cd using windows media player, it tells me to insert a blank disc, when I do it doesn't see a blank disc

Your optical drive is not capable of burning ANY DVD media. It can only READ DVD media and burn CD media. Below is a link to TEac for that unit. See for yourself.

What part of READ ONLY for DVD didn't you understand? If you have the drive listed above it is NOT capable of writing the ANY DVD disks of any kind.

You CAN use CDR or CDRW disks to record your music.

You could get an external USB DVD burner.
