System Recovery - lost files!!

September 20, 2010 at 16:11:57
Specs: Windows XP
After my computer crashed, a messege appeared saying that the software disc had to be inserted. As I have lost this disc, I was advised to do a system recovery by pressing F10 at the start up screen. When I did this, almost all of the files (pictures and word documents) were gone! I know very little about computers so I don't know whether any of these files can be retrieved. Does anyone have any suggestions? There were previously a number of user accounts but now there is only one. The picture files from the previous administrator account are still there but the word documents are all gone. My account (not the administrator) has been completely wiped out. No files from my account can be found.

If anyone could give me their advice, I would be very grateful.

If you had only one drive C, which is in most cases and you do a system recovery, all files are lost and all settings are, as they were when you bought the computer.
Therefore, it's always absolutely necessary, to backup your own created files to another hard drive (maybe USB drive) or burn them on DVD.
If you haven't made any backup, your files are lost.

You can try running a data recovery program but it's likely that the new installation has overwritten all your files, meaning that they're gone for good. It's worth a shot though. The following program is free & will allow you to recover up to 1GB of files:

Hopefully you may be able to recover some (if not all) of them as suggested above...

Avoid wrting anything more to the drive as is until you have tried/exhausted all file recovery attempts...

Regardless of outcome... make it your standard practice to reguarly copy all your files to external storage - another HD and/or optical media... That way you have them safe in event of future failures of the installed OS etc...
