System hogging memory

Specs: Windows XP, Pentium 4 2.4 ghz/1 GB
Hi. When i go to Windows Task Manager,
usually the biggest memory hog is:

Image Name: System
User Name : System
Memory Usage: 62800 K

I don't remember this being there so i don't
think it's essential, but now my computer is
sluggish even when i access the internet.. The
memory usage is always the same too. I'd
appreciate any help.

I have that 'system - system' thing also. Maybe you just missed it before.
Run msconfig and check the 'Startup' tab for anything suspicious and see if you can't trim it down a little. Everything in that list runs all the time and eats up memory and CPU cycles.

Check the following web sites for help with things that you don't recognize:

You need to increase virtual memory, delete temporary files and uncheck any unnecessary start up programs.
