System freeze when deleting anything

Specs: Windows XP, 1.996 GHz / 1023 MB
Every time I try to delete something my computer freezes, cant ever ctrl, alt, delete. I can move the mouse but thats all. I have run all of the virus scans, spyware, registry repairs, and defrags. nothing helps. The problem did go away temporarily after doing a system restore, but it started freezing when attempting to delete again about a day later. Also on another user account on my computer the recycling bin says "are you sure you want to delete WINDOWS" I have enabled "show hidden files" but it is still empty. My computer run fast and has no problems other that the freezing when attempting to delete. Can some one help me? Im out of ideas.

some history on this - presumably it hasn't always been happening - would be useful. Have you looked in the event log (run eventvwr.msc) for clues (not always useful, but there may be some indication). Have you run chkdsk? (chkdsk c: /f from a command prompt - say yes to it running on restart then restart) - as filestore corruptions could cause this.

btw - does it happen on all accounts?

Are you sure you have no malware? (either run msconfig or download and run autoruns. Look for odd startup entries - random strings of letters rather than 'names').

There must be a fix for my problem, Im brainstorming with no good results.

I just ran eventvwr.msc, It shows many errors and warnings. What do I do about all of them. When I right click them the only option is to refresh, properties or, help.

You can double click entries in event log to open them. Then there's an option to get more info from the net (though this may not in fact be any help!)

Are any of the errors disk errors (particularly bad blocks?)

Instead of using Ctrl+alt+del, right click on the taskbar and select Task Manager from there.

Hi,

I have the same problem, it started on Dec 30 2010, I am afraid I clicked a link on my colleagues e-mail - since then I cannot delete browsing history, as rundll32.exe appears several times on my taskmanager, uses all the memory and computer freezes.

with one free trial anti-spyware programme I got the info that I have a trojan attached to IE, but alas I could never trace that again.
Seeking solutions on the net...
