Tell us the make and model of your brand name system, or if you have a generic desktop system, the make and model of the mboard.

The specific model of a brand name system is often shown on a label on the outside of the case somewhere, or it can often be determined by going to the brand name's web site and loading a program they have available, if Windows is still working, on the subject computer.

If it's a Dell computer...
Go here for how to find the Service tag "number":
http://support.dell.com/support/top...

Tell us what it is.

If it's a HP or Compaq computer.....
Go here:
http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx
Scroll down a bit.
Look for the similar label on the outside of your computer.
Quote the specific model number - that's at the end of the first line.
Quote the Product number - that's on the third line.

If it's a Lenovo computer
Find your specific Product number and tell us what it is:

Finding my product number
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/Fin...

The model, sometimes the make, of a mboard in a generic desktop system is usually printed on the mboard's surface in obvious larger characters, often between the slots.

"acer aspire one laptop kav60"

An Aspire One computer is a netbook, NOT a "real" laptop.

kav60 is NOT the proper model number.

There is NO Netbook - Aspire One - kav60 model listed on the US and UK Acer web sites, even when you select Show all models !
Searching the US and UK Acer web sites with kav60 finds nothing !

I found this on the web when I searched using Acer Aspire One kav60:

Acer Aspire One D250 Review

Excerpt from a user comment:

I have some one of these d250, kav60 machine. Its OK! works really good, so fine. In Mexico, me costò 4773 pesos, muy barata! caramba

Also found on the web
"Acer Aspire One Netbook D250 Series KAV60"

I searched the web using: Acer Aspire One D250
and the only usefull "hits" I've found so far on Acer web sites are

Drivers and downloads for Acer Aspire One D250 (Acer Europe)
http://support.acer-euro.com/driver...

That refers to the ftp site, the only stuff for D250 is here:
xxx://xxx.acer-euro.com/netbook/aspire_one_D250

(This site uses software that does not enable hot links to ftp sites properly. Copy the entire link, paste it into notepad, replace both xxx with ftp, copy the entire edited link into your browser's Address or similar line, to go there.)

No manual, no specs there.

Specfically...
Acer Aspire One D250-1165

Acer serial number ?
AOD255-2520 N450 160GB 1GB W7S
....

What country did you buy it in ?

Find the proper info about your computer.

"asms needed, installed win xp got all the way up to installing windows and the file asms on xp service pack 3 cd is needed. but I dont have a cdrom and nothing works I tried everything. "

"....installed win xp got all the way up to installing windows and the file asms on xp service pack 3 cd is needed. but I dont have a cdrom "

Explain how you attempted to install XP when your netbook has no optical (CD or DVD) drive.

You have an el-cheapo computer - it probably cost about $300 US dollars, or the equivalent in your currency, or less.
Modern Acer computers NEVER come with a Windows re-installation CD or DVD Recovery disks !
However, you can usually buy a Recovery disk set from the Acer web site.
(See the info at the end of this post - response 4 at the link I pointed to.)

You usually CANNOT install XP from an XP CD in a USB optical drive because in most if not all cases, the XP CD cannot recognize the USB optical drive model.

" the file asms on xp service pack 3 cd is needed."

Tell us under which circumstances you get that message.

That's a generic message you get when a file that is one installed for XP with the SP3 updates integrated into the original software installation is missing or corrupted, or if it's not being found by Windows for whatever reason.
(There are CDs that have only the SP3 updates, or you can make one, but most or all the files are compressed or are not accessible until you run a program on the CD - that's not what it's asking for.)

Searched the web using:
the file asms on xp service pack 3 cd is needed

The file 'asms' on Windows XP Home is SP3 is Needed
http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/win...

Obviously, you mis-quoted the error message.
Yours would have had Home, or Pro, or Pro 64 bit, or MCE 2xxx in it as well.

excerpt:

"just change the cdrom0\i386 to d:\i386"

As in, change the location of where it is looking for the file to that.

Brand name computers often have a second partition on the original brand name software installation that has the \i386 folder on it that is normally found on the XP CD, and if so, you don't need to insert the Windows CD. Usually that works automatically, but if you get an error message, you point it to the \i386 folder on the D partition and Windows should find the file.

That may or may not work, depending on whether the original software installation included the SP3 updates for XP.

(By the way, I searched the whole drive partition my XP installation is on and there is no asms anything file.)
..............

".....had virus I think."

Most malware these days is NOT a virus - it's something else.

The asms error probably has nothing to do with malware !

" regedit.exe wont work saying cannot execute."

That probably DOES indicate you STILL have malware on your computer, if your user has full administrator rights.
e.g.
Control Panel ( - Classic view ) - User Accounts - if your user has Computer Administrator below your user name.
...........

Have you tried loading Safe mode or Safe mode with networking while booting ?
Sometimes the malware isn't there, or it is but there are fewer symptoms when you load either of those modes.

Remove any bootable CDs or DVDs from drives.

Repeatedly press F8 while booting, don't hold down the key, and when the (Windows) loading choices menu appears, choose

Safe mode
or
Safe mode with networking

..........

Some computers have another use for pressing the F8 key while booting,
E.g. You may see a screen where you can select a device to boot the computer from.

If you see that, READ the text on the screen to find the key that exits that screen, e.g. Esc.
Press that key, then immediately repeatedly press the F8 key, then you will see the (Windows) loading choices menu, choose

Safe mode
or
Safe mode with networking

..........

If neither of those work, see response 1 in this:
http://www.computing.net/answers/ha...
..........

For info about how to probably remove malware if you have it, and info about Acer netbooks that had XP on them originally....

I tried everything even changing the drives on the install. it says exactly "the file asms windows xp service pack 3 cd is needed" thats what it says, and if I pull up the cmd. and try to type regedit.exe it says cannot execute. so Im stuck. tried to boot from flash drive and everything. I got nothing. Im thinking of just changing the hard drive and ram. tried safe mode it says cannot run setup in safe mode. so Im just stuck

We don't need you to repeat what you've already said.

Read ALL of response 3, until you understand all of it or as much as you are able to - if you have'nt noticed, you have to scroll down in it to see all of it.

Please provide the ACTUAL model found when you go to the Acer web site to find that info at the link I provided, and answer ALL other questions I asked.
If you don't want to do a lot of typing, simply select (hold down your left mouse button to highlight it), RIGHT click (on the highlighted text) , Copy the text you want in your post, RIGHT click (in your post) , Paste it into your post, and answer the question or make a comment.

I was not finished editing it when you made response 4.

Your hard drive and ram have probably got nothing to do with your problem ! !

If changing the drive letter to D doesn't help, look on your C partition. If you have an \i386 folder, change that to C, not D.

"tried it all, you got anything else? I uninstalled it and reinstalled it using a usb cdrom but I dont have it anymore."

There's not enough info in that statement for me to know what you did.

If you had a Recovery disk set, you could have used a USB optical drive to install that, but you probably CANNOT install XP from a XP CD in a USB optical drive !

READ the info at the link at the end of response 4, and the info at the links that refers to ! !

If you want more help, provide ALL the info I asked for in response 5 !
