Solved Start menu has changed to French

May 15, 2012 at 09:02:18
Specs: XP Home, 2.5/1gig
Weird one this (aren't they all!). I've just removed some ransomware from an XP computer and everything seems back to normal except that the Start menu is in French! Everything else is in English; My Computer, Control Panel, even part of the Start menu - the menu itself says 'demarrer', Control Panel is ''Panneau de configuration', All Programs is ''Tous les programs' & the log-off/shut-down are also in French (though once 'shutdown is selected, the logoff/restart/shutdown selections are in English), also 'run', 'help'. 'search' are all in English.

All control panel/regional settings are in English & I cannot find a mention of French anywhere else.

Any ideas would be appreciated. We can live with the odd bit of French so don't wan to do anything major that could screw it completely.

Edit: I've run sfc and that made no changes/difference. Also searched the registry for 'french' and 'francais', just to see if that gave any clues and I couldn't see anything unusual.

Just posting back - replacing explorer.exe from an SP2 disk has worked.

Consider a reload. You never know what has gone on with some of this stuff.

Hang up and live.

No there's nothing amiss apart from the start menu issue so I don't want to go for a reinstall especially as it's an old system that will be replaced within the next 12 months. We can handle schoolbook French so it's not a major issue, it would just be nice if there was a fix for it, and the fact that it seems to be an unusual problem means I would like to sort it out. I'll upload some screengrabs when I have a moment just so you can see what I mean by 'weird'.

Here are a couple of samples of what I'm talking about:

It's the mixture of French and English that I cannot understand.

Try a restore point then to a time before the malware was installed.

Hang up and live.

Sorry, no restore points available, the clean-up entailed clearing System Restore & the only point remaining is one that I took just after the cleanup. I'm beginning to suspect it's something to do with explorer.exe as that also had to be replaced during the cleanup. It wasn't until the system was up & running that I realised it was only updated to SP2 and the copy of the file I used was from an SP3 system so I'm going to first try finding an SP2 copy, otherwise I'll install SP3 later on today. Shall report back.
