Help me! My standby button is grayed out and i do not know what to do...

Bring "Task Manager" up by right-clicking taskbar>Task Manager>Shut down (in toolbar) > stand by

Well I want to do it so that I can turn off my hdd and stuff without turning the whole PC off...
You set those under Power Options in Control Panel.
Already tried power options. nothing there
Why not use 'Hibernate' mode instead?
As was already stated, Standby & Hibernate are power saving features for mobile devices, not desktops. If you're trying to be "green" or if turning your machine on & off is too much of a chore, right click on the desktop screen, click Properties, click the Screen Saver tab, click the Power button - you can then adjust your Power Scheme settings to your heart's content.
