I do not have any bad files, and I am only using 87% of my space, yet the downloading and retrieval of files is VERY slow.
How big is the hard drive? Less than 15% of free space is not much to work with, try downloading and installing CCleaner and run it and see if it clears out any unnecessary files, then report back. You've been helped by a 15 year old.
It appears you have a netbook - Acer Aspire One AOA150-1635? If these Amazon specs are correct, it has an Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, GMA950 graphics, & 160GB HDD. It probably wasn't very fast, even on it's best day. http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AOA150-1...
"and I am only using 87% of my space"
ONLY? Your HDD is almost full, it's time to do some major house cleaning. Dump the recycle bin, unless it's empty, whatever is in it is still taking up space on the drive. Install & run CCleaner as was suggested above, I recommend the Slim version:

Then start uninstalling any programs or games you installed but don't use anymore. And copy off any files, photos, videos, etc to an external HDD, USB flash drive, or burn the files to CDs or DVDs.
If the downloading itself is slow then it might be worth doing a speedcheck online (choose one near you). Sometimes the net or server can get a bit overloaded. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
