Sound stops working

Altec lansing Vs3251 speaker system

Specs: Windows XP
This is a bit of a curious one.

After playing on my PC for a day to a few days, the sound just stops working altogether. I have restored to points before the issue happens and it fixes it after I restart following the restore.

But the issue reoccurs after a few days again, i'm almost positive it's not any software installations.

The only thing I notice changing is when I click the volume tab in task bar the buttons have changed. When I click properties they have changed from Realtek HD Audio output to ATI HD Audio rear output, I only have 1 speaker connected at the moment to the Front left as there is a problem with the right ones.

Also plugging in a headset does not work either. Thanks for any replies.

perhaps there is an automatic update that changes your audio settings to "ATI HD Audio rear output" ?

if not i want you to find something out for me
when your sound doesn't work go to:
control panel> sounds and devices> hardware > legacy audio drivers > properties > properties

then tell me what is under multimedia devices also do it when your sound is working

Thanks for the reply, Zicrest.

I have done as you asked, and also changed my automatic updates to only let me manually install but notify me. Is there a way to find out about previous automatic updates when I undo the restore? (To when the sound is not working)

There is currently nothing under Multimedia devices when the sound is working, I am about to undo the System restore point and will post if there is anything there when sound is not working.

After restoring to the point where the sound does not work, there is nothing under the Multimedia tab. It is also worth mentioning something else, when the sound doesn't work, it weirdly enough works when I click the sound test in Realtek HD Audio manager, under the 3D Audio Demo section. It works nowhere else as far as I have seen.
