sort of freezing

November 7, 2010 at 16:09:12
Specs: Windows XP
Suddenly my computer sort of freezes. The desktop background changes to a sort of blue blur and even though I can move the cursor, the letters I am typing in the search field of browser for example, won't show up. I can't get a response when I type ctrl/alt/delete or click on the Start button to try to restart. Only thing I can do is manually restart by pressing button on computer. Then it runs the scans, everything looks good and I'm up and running again. Only trouble is after a few hours it will happen again.
Any ideas? I am running windows xp on an acer computer that has been awesome for about 8 years. I only have 17 gigs of freespace. Perhaps its not enough?

AuntyHoney, 'sort of freezes' sounds to me like it's buffering new tasks. How much RAM memory do you have? HDD free space doesn't matter, just RAM. Some machines are kinda borderline and since yours is old by 'puter standards, it's suspect. In my experience 500 Megs is pretty much the minimum for satisfactory operation. Maybe you need to add more?
Something you might try instead is to empty out your 'temp' files. That gets done when you reboot, but you can do it while still active with a properly configured 'Ccleaner' (free @:

Thank you for your help Ed. I have 1.43 GB of RAM. I did a system restore to an earlier date, updated my Mozilla Firefox browser and it seems to be working ok now. However, it seemed to be working fine before and then it happened again. I'll just have to wait and see if the problem comes back this time. I love, it is such a relief to be able to ask questions and get help.
Thanks again for responding to my plea!

AuntyHoney, I'd still get/run Ccleaner. I run it often to keep things trim.
