serial-to-USB adapter/cable

Specs: Windows XP, dual core / 3 gigs
Hello all. I am trying to install a serial to USB cable on my laptop for an external device. The software seems to be defaulting on com3 but NEED it to run on com1 .....

This is on Windows XP and on a laptop

Any ideas how to change....??

Do this:
Right-click on My Computer, pick Properties
Go to the Hardware Tab
Click on Device Manager
Expand: Ports (COM & LPT)
If you already have a COM1 displayed, right-click on it and pick properties
Go to Port Settings, then click Advanced.
Change port to something other than COM1
Click OK
Now, right-click on your USB COM3 port.
Go to Port Settings, then click Advanced.
Change port to COM1
Click OK
Close all open windows.

This may not stick after a reboot.
