Run disk cloning software from different OS

Specs: Windows XP
I have dual boot system with both as Win XP and in different partitions. Now I need to backup the 2nd Win XP installation.

1) Is it possible to install and run the cloning software (like DriveImage XML) from inside of the 1st Win XP and then backup the 2nd Win XP installation. (This is so that I get a clean backup of the 2nd WinXP without installing any softwares)

2) Simmilarly while restoring can I run the cloning software from inside of the 1st Win XP, and from here restore the back up over the 2nd XP installation. (Thus I do not need to create a restore cd, usb. to restore the backup. I can do the restore from the other OS)

Thus all the while I do not need to boot into the 2nd Win XP installation. From the 1st XP installation itself I can do the back up and restore.

Where exactly are you going to save/store the image?

I have another partition free, where I will store the Image.

Once you have an image stored somewhere safe (optical media or another HD/partition)... as long as you can access it via a working OS... it's usable - as in you ought to be able to transfer it to a suitable partition.

So create image of second version and save to wherever... Then if/when you need to access and restore sed image to wherever, use version-1 as means of getting it to second partition?

I'd still be inclined to have a boot disk approach too (as a fall-back approach or whatever); one that allows you to boot the system and then access/restore the image... Acronis allow this option as does (or did...?) Ghost vairiants as there more standard approach.

Essentially once an image is stored and accessible... you can transfer it to wherever you wish...
