Rig PDA/Nettop to XP laptop for backup

Specs: Windows XP
I am looking for a device to use primarily as a pda (ie it must be instant boot - phone or pda style - and be sufficiently small to whip out in meetings to set appointments).
I do not want it as part of a phone - I want it as a separate device.
It must hook up to an XP laptop for backup and file transfer.
It must have a small but effective keyboard because I want to do word processing on it when on a plane (ie no wireless keyboard allowed).
It must also be friendly and functional (unlike the iPAQ monster I have now).

"Nice-to-haves" include good battery life, and GPS.

Does such a device exist?
Does the iPad do this stuff?

I use an HTC HD2 with a 16Gb card - it is a phone but having
Windows mobile 6.5 it easily syncs with a laptop/pc, has a
decent on-screen keyboard, built-in Word/excel etc. & also has
GPS. The iPad may do a lot of things but it definitely isn't small
enough to 'whip out' in meetings and I suspect it won't be as
good on syncing with any Microsoft kit.
