Restore backed up files

July 24, 2010 at 23:36:52
Specs: Windows XP
Fire destroyed XP PC and software in use for years using Fast Back Plus to create backups. Need to restore these 3 1/2 FD archives. Any clues to where this software might be obtained. Tried the "demo" of version 2.0 (1988) but it wouldn't read the files. Printouts with disks show Fast Back was used to backup. Tried unsuccessfully to use Windows Backup to open files. Need help.

What files extensions are used? That software was originally written for DOS over 20 years ago. It's doubtful it would even work with XP.

Thanks for the reply, Jennifer.
The file extension is just a numberical entry - ie, "dot"001 (.001).
The file lable is user defined - D10072401.001.

This was a somewhat popular backup utility way back when... and I was just hoping someone might have a copy sitting on a shelf somewhere.

Try here:

http://www.emsps.com/oldtools/misc-...

They claim to have:

Fastback Plus 2.1, 3.5"

A bit steep on the price.....

Free download here, but you will have to register at no cost.

http://vetusware.com/download/FastB...

Comes in a zip file, seems to be complete but I can not tell.

Thanks to all - especially for the prompt replies. The vetusware.com site zip file was the 3.0 version and seems to be what I needed.
I unzipped it to my flash drive and was able to copy it to the target machine. It actually ran under on the XP machine!

I'm in the process of getting some utils to make that machine a DOS box... since there are DOS programs on it that they use. Hopefully I'll get there eventually.

Again.... thanks to all for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to respond.

Jerry

I just read your post from July of 2010 regarding recovering old Fastback backup files from floppies. I have a number of old fastback archives (CAD drawings from 20 years ago) on 5 1/4" 1.2MB floppy disks. I recently had a request for one of these files and have been trying to recover it. I still have multiple versions of my old Fastback DOS software and finally installed v6 today on an old 1.5GB IDE drive w/DOS 6.22. The Fastback software runs (v6) but crashes with a "DIVIDE ERROR" when running the Hardware Test.

We're you able to get your fastback software to run? Under DOS on XP? If so, how?

The original poster, jstretch posted only the one question and has not posted anything since July.

Not sure you will get a response, but you can try to send a Private Message, which might get forwarded to an email address if he left one.

You might also ask your question about the DIVIDE ERROR in the General Hardware forum, someone there might be of assistance.
Make sure you describe your set up in as much detail as possible.
