Removing DIMM Ram missing or corrupt ntoskrnl

Specs: Windows XP, Athlon 3200/Mushkin 1.5GB
I have an XP 64 bit system trying to get the most out of it and realized that I would get better performance with 2 DIMMS running at DDR 400 instead of 3 DIMMS at DDR 200. However, when I remove the DIMM from the 3rd slot, I get this error on boot "missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe". No matter which DIMMS I use in 1 or 2. Replace the missing DIMM and put all in the same order and boot no problem. I've tried every combination and rebooting. Sometimes I get no video - but then replace DIMMS and all works as usual. I've looked everywhere for solution.

Guys at Mushkin has no clue. Any suggestions? Please help.

this might be related to the boot.ini. Can you get to a prompt to do a fixboot? You might need to try doing a repair installation of the os.
