remove incomplete clean Vista upgrade install

Specs: Windows XP
hi,our whole system crashed right down to the command prompt,used the original windows xp home disc but received a fatal error message.Tried cleaning the disc but apparently it is scratched.We bought a vista upgrade but it won't overwrite the partial install-how do I remove the incomplete xp?

When booting to the Vista DVD you should get options. Use Custom install. That should give you the option to delete all partitions.

When I put the vista disc in the cd drive the system defaults to windows xp setup even when I specify"BOOT FROM DISC"The cd runs for approx 30 seconds and I receive the message to insert CD labled windows xp.........I"ve tried starting in safe mode with the same results-I'm getting frustruated

Does this system have a floppy drive? Use a bootfloppy with something like Delpart.exe to wipe the old partitions and then give the Vista CD another go. Of course since the Vista is an upgrade disk it will ask for a valid qualifying product so you need to have an XP disk available.

Enter the machines BIOS Setup and ensure that it's set to boot from an Optical Device first.
