Reinstall hard drive problem

Specs: Windows XP
Im trying to reinstall windows to my 5 1/2 year-
old sony vaio laptop. My plan is to dual-boot it
with linux once ubuntu 9.04 comes out (well,
im going to use xubuntu, not that that makes
a difference to this), so i partitioned the hard
drive into ~10gb ntfs, ~6gb ext3, and the
docking station's hd as ~54gb fat32. I did this
with gparted.

I ran the install cd, and it worked near-
perfectly, copying files to the ntfs drive. It had
a problem with a file at about 52% done
though. I don't remember the exact name, but
something2k.inf. I took out the disk, cleaned
it a bit, and it worked.

it restarted, and now im getting the screen
that just says "press any key to boot from
I don't press any key, and it just stays there. It
doesnt boot from the hard drive. If i set the
bios to boot from the hard drive, it just gives
me a screen with a flashing "_".

So, how do I get it to work?

The laptop had 256mb ram, and a ~1.3ghz
processor - intel pentium 3.

Just realized, i forgot to mention something fairly important:

i lost the xp cd that came with the vaio, so I'm using the dell
one form my desktop. Windows xp professional reinstall cd.
I used it very recently, and sucessfully, on a virtual machine,
so i'm fairly sure it's not a problem with the disk.
