Registry Mechanic wants to repair XP registry

September 5, 2010 at 09:06:15
Specs: Windows XP Pro, pentium duo 2Gb
Every time I run Reg Mechanic it wants to repair two file extensions HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.MET AND \.PART. They are back every time that I run a registry scan.
I now read that I should not touch them. Is reg mechanic wrong?

They will be file extensions, They are probably being put there by an application you are running that needs them. It does no harm to leave them even if they are doing nothing.

Reg Mechanic is often wrong and should be used with extreme caution.

I suggest it's generally wise(r) to avoid running alleged registry cleaners/fixers etc. - unless you really problems and hope they may help resolve them. Frequently folks use such utils and end up with problems they didn't know they had - such problems often being introduced, or "imagined" by the utils themselves...

That olde maxim:

"If it ain't broke... don't fix it...

is useful to remember when thinking about using these utils.

Many thanks for the replies,
I've long suspected that reg mechanic has been responsible for some of the crashes that i've had. and will only use it it sparingly if at all from now on.

CCleaner is good. It is not so aggressive as some of the others and probably leaves a lot of redundant stuff behind which is harmless. Far more preferable than deleting something that is needed.

Sadly registry cleaners seem to be judged on how many entries they remove, rather than how many good ones they leave alone.

Sadly with my scant knowledge that's exactly how I was brainwashed and thought it was doing a wonderful job
