Registry Backup Gone wrong

Microsoft Windows xp professional w/sp2

Specs: Windows XP pro SP2, 2.4ghz 512mb
I've imported my registry backups both,
hive and .reg files, but nothing seems to
restore the sound to my system. Otherwise
everything appears..O.K.
Currently the hive backups worked.

Device manager says that its running fine,
and I've tried various ways of editing.

One of the first times I've actually had to
completely replace the registry, and I'm bit horrified
that I can't just import everything from the full.reg

Is there some hold out in the registry I am not
aware of?

Its been a very long time since I have posted here.
My last Post was about a Voodoo3 in the 'day.

I'm bit stubborn to reinstall, and I know I would
lose a lot if I chose to.
As well as I want to know 'how' to fix this in the
future if anyone else asks.

Friend of mine said I could use the ERD but I'm
well aware that it talks bout using the repair folder
in windows, which didn't help much, already
moved those by putting the harddrive in another

I am very lucky that I had a backup.
Urge anyone who reads this to do one themselves.

I assume you've tried removing then re-installing the sound driver? (The driver could be corrupt even when DM says it's working properly).

Checked the software "mute" setting?

Check sound software isn't set to "Digital Output"?
