Solved Recovering deleted folders/files

Specs: Windows XP Pro 2002 SP3, Intel 23 T2300@1.66GHz/0.99 Ram
I needed to delete some files to make space on my hard drive so I deleted my "photos" folder from a folder on my hard drive entitled "[my name]_documents" since it appears to be a separate folder with all my files in it. I got the message that the files wouldn't fit in the recycle bin & did I want to actually delete them, so I said "yes." After I did this, I went to "my_documents" to backup my files to my passport external drive and I found that my "photos" folder was not there either! Why does windows explorer have a duplicate folder of my_documents under my real name when it is just a mirror image? How do I get my folder back (I have pictures back to the 90s, but my passport is only updated to March 2011). I tried a restore but the only time listed was this morning after I deleted the folder. Why don't I have other restore points since I don't have "turn off system restore" checked in System Properties?

Try using recuva. Should work. Don't write anything to the drive in the mean time. Get recuva at the link below.

It's not a duplicate, it's just the way Windows presents it to you. Think of "My Pictures" as being a shortcut to the real one in "[my name]_documents". This is an attempt to make things simple (although I have never been convinced).

Try a freebie called Recuva:

Unfortunately everthing you have done since the folder vanished has lowered your chance of recovery because some or all might now have been overwritten.

Thank you both for telling me about recuva. It worked to recover a lot of the 15000 photos I inadvertently deleted. However, it did not work to sort them back into folders they were sorted in, even though I clicked that option. This utility is great for recovering files and I will probably need it in the future.
