recovered MP3 player files useless

Specs: Windows XP pro 64bit, Intel Quad Core 2.40ghz/2GB
One day i disconnected my MP3 player directly without safe remove, you know, and when i use it, it failes to work. Then i connect the player to my PC, it just asked me to format. I know if do that, i will lose mariah carey's best single and some other important things.
So what can i do to aviod this?:(

try a recovery software such as recuva

recuva failed to restore the player to normal use, even recover the audio files, appreciate any help!

jesseyoung, file recovery is a sorta arcane thing bordering on black magic. Maybe 'Recova' failed where some other proggie might succeed? Try one of the others listed below with crossed fingers.
