Recover lost files after changing Windows XP User account

Specs: Windows XP
my pc was frequently crushing and there was a message to say i could try changing the user account for the problem to stop. i did this and subsequently lost most of my files. i need to go back to my old files. how can i do this?

Log off the user account you do not like, then log in to your old account. then go to control panel, USERS, and delete the account you do not want.

the old account is not coming up. it is only the new account that i have created that is coming up! what to do?

Try a file recovery software if you deleted the user account. Otherwise look at Documents and Settings to see if the old account folder is still there.

I understand that, but the user folder & all the files are still on the hard drive. Try looking in C:\Documents & Settings\**username**\My Documents

**username** = the user account that's not working
