January 27, 2010 at 07:49:53
Specs: Windows XP
I re-istalled the OS and did all updates before installing the Realtec HD drivers. Now I have no sound as the drivers will not install in SP3 (XP PRO)

check your PC manufacturer's website for an updated driver.
If the PC is 'no name' or custom built model, check the motherboard manufacturer's website for an updated sound driver. You'll need to know the motherboard make & model, so download "Belarc Advisor" from here:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download...

Run it to produce a system information report.
Post it to us but don't include the installed software or Windows hotfixes section which usually appears at the bottom - all we need is the hardware section above it.

I used the driver from the original motherboard realtek HD driver, I also down loaded from the motherboard site and I also down loaded from Realtek. None of them work. I have been told it is because it does not work with service pack 3 unless it is intalled on service pack 2 first. But I don't want to go backwards. I need a fix or a new driver that works with SP3.

You don't need to install SP1 or 2 in order to install SP3.

Why do you say the drivers are not working? Go to device manager and look at the sound listing for Realtek. If Windows says the device is working properly then the drivers are OK.

If that is the case you may just need to confugure the ports. Do you have the Realtek sound manager icon in the tray by the clock? If so, open it and use to map the ports according to how you have the wiring connected. Also check to verify nothing is muted. Re-installing sound results in the device being muted many times.

First thank you all for helping. Back in Dec I had to put a new hard drive in. My XP Pro disc has SP2 on it. After I got it installed instead of doing all my motherboard drivers (sound etc) I went to Microsoft updates and went to SP3. After that I tried to install the Realtek HD drivers and the never would go in from any fore mentioned attempts or site. I learned later that the Realtek HD drivers just will not go in if SP3 is installed first.
Some tech told me how to regedit and change the hex value from 200 to 300 then remove MS update kb888111xpsp2 then install the Realtek drivers, then update again. However, I could not find the kb888111 update to remove. In the mean time I put another old sound card in. I could not get it to work as I did not know the mfg (old card) and Windows did not recognize it. Then, just now when I turned the computer back on it found it???? So it works but not as good as the Realtek HD. I think I need Realtek HD drivers that work with SP3 but don't think there is any.

The exact model of mother board is a Gigabyte
GA-M61SME-S2
Now that this Yamaha card is working I see I am missing some Volume control program it says I need to add. However I have to get it from MS site as I have SP3 now. Anyhow I am getting an error about not being able to open msnmsn.inf so it can not do it. I saw this error a couple times but do not know how to repair that file. Can you hep with that as it may be part of the problem. thanks
