Specs: Windows XP
I would like a list of brands and features on the laptop that would be good for a Masters student (Comp. Sc.).

Thank you

It's difficult to recommend something without knowing the demands you have for the system.

Thank you for your prompt response. I purchased a Dell Inspiron (I think 6100 ) for my daughter with a 17" monitor and SVGA, 80 GB hard disk etc. That laptop is too big and heavy to carry around into the class room. What I want is a leight weight, 11" to 13" monitor with 2GB to 3GB memory, decent sized hard drive (we can always get a flash/jump drive to reduce the weight) and MS office tools.

I hope the above defines my requirements for you to suggest the right model. Appreciate if you give a list under $1,000. I do not need printer/scanner, etc. like typical student. I have them from the previous purchase. Thank you for your help.

Googling the following search terms "Lightweight laptops under $1000" without the quotes, produces 161,000 hits.

And since you posted this in the XP forum, you might want to consider that you'd have to buy used to get XP on a machine right now (unless you found an ultra portable with XP Home, but that may not meet your other requirements)...

You do not have to buy used to get XP. And as far as office its going to be about $500.00. My niece needed office for school. I figured the student version about $140.00 would do. But she needed the program called access and the student version did not include access. But Dell still sells laptops with XP.
