Problems loading XP after HD defragmentation

April 25, 2010 at 12:08:56
Specs: Windows XP
I defragged my drives yesterday, including boot C drive. Now Windows XP won't complete reload, either from C drive; CD, or floppy.
Some instructions are useless because they require that you have the CD up and running! Dugh!
The computer will not even get into Safe Mode to do any work on it.
Does anybody have anything useful that will work for me to get Windows up and running?

Not being able to boot from the floppy or CD drive has nothing to do with Windows. Are you sure they're both listed before the HDD in the boot order?

What happens when you press F8? Did you try "last known good configuration"?

I was finally able to reboot from the XP CD, and am now trying to decide whether to try Repair using Recovery Console once again. First try did not repair so that Windows would load from the HD itself. I guess one must reset the CMOS or whatever it's called.
The next thing - shall I overwrite everything by installing XP over the old installation? And lose everything on there?
