Problems Desktop XP starts in black screen

Specs: Windows XP, @ gigs
Hi all I am having problems with my XP home edition desktop. When my computer starts up it goes to this black screen and I have to push F1 for it to go into the desktop setup. Now I put new batteries in it to see if that was the problem and it is not the problem. I reset the date and time which are still configured. It also shuts down when it wants and restarts. So with all that said here I am at a loss.

I could use any help you might offer.

Thanks so much.

It sounds like your hard drive has gone bad. Could also be a corrupted MBR. My suggestion is to take it to a professional.

How old is your machine? Do you know if it uses IDE or SATA hard drive? Even if you replace the hard drive you will still have to reinstall Windows, so make sure you have the installation discs handy.

It is SATA. I have the original disc's given to me when I bought it. I got the computer in 2007. It is an Enpower I do not have the money to take it in that is why I am trying to do it through forums.

Thanks

I found this by doing a google search. You'll have to stop after step 4, as for step 5 you will have to use the installation CD to do.

Be sure to save your old hard drive, as its most likely possible to recover any data you wish to save. You would need an external SATA HDD enclosure to do so.

"It also shuts down when it wants and restarts"

Disable the auto-restart feature, then rather than restarting, a BSOD will be displayed pointing you to the problem.
