Problem with installing from recovery CD

July 9, 2011 at 13:15:38
Specs: Windows XP
I had to replace the hard drive in my Gateway Laptop. Now when attempting to reinstall all the software from the original Gateway Recovery CD (Windows XP) It goes through most of the install process, swapout disk 1 and disk 2, and back to disk 1, then right at 94% finished, while it is Restoring Windows System Files, it just shuts off! We thought something must be wrong with the new hard drive, so I sent it back for a replacement. Put in the 2nd new one, SAME THING! So it's not the HD. Could the CD be bad?

Odd that it shuts off. CD could be bad. Since it happens exactly at a same place would seem to suggest it.

Maybe the thing is actually finished. Remove cd and see if the system will boot correctly.

Could be a hardware problem with the laptop. What prompted you to replace the HDD?

A local computer repair shop told me that the cooling fan had quit working, so my hard drive overheated and broke. I was in the process of editing a video when my computer made sounds a computer is not supposed to make! (clicking and grinding) Its a 2005 model and the repair shop was giving me quite a high price for repairs. But after sitting on my shelf for 9 months, I discovered the parts on ebay were not really that expensive. So I got the new fan and bought a new hard drive.

I generally work on desktops & have only worked on a handful of laptops, but I've never seen one with a cooling fan for the HDD?

Run some diags on the system. Maybe ultimate boot cd and run memtests and hard drive diags.
