My MSN messenger was no longer remembering my password and sign in info. I found that this is caused by a registry value changing from "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data" to just "%APPDATA%" and have changed it back to the proper value several times now.

The problem is that every 2 or 3 days it changes back to the incorrect "%APPDATA%" value and I have to go fix it again.

Is there a way to lock the correct value and prevent it from changing again?

Uninstall MSN and switch to Windows Live Messenger instead, which has replaced MSN Messenger.

MSN Messenger, although still usable, is no longer available or supported. See this:

Windows Live Messenger is here:

You may be be able to use your existing MSN Messenger sign in credentials with Live Messenger, but I can't swear to it as I don't use it.

My mistake, I am currently using Windows Live messenger 2009 version, which I believe is the latest version. I'm just still used to calling it MSN.

Elsewhere I found that installing the Yahoo toolbar causes the registry change that I mentioned, however I have not installed the Yahoo toolbar, so that shouldn't be causing the problem.
