PC wont shutdown

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 1.397 GHz / 958 MB
Ok, i got myself into a bit of a problem, Well, a big problem xD.

Ok basically, last night i was at my nans & had to go home, i shut down my pc and because i rebooted my laptop a few days ago it had Updates.
46 of them !
& i couldn'twait for them & theres no other way of skipping them on the blue screen.
So, me being a noob Held the button down to force it to shut off.
Because i had to go home. & i couldn't leave my battery on because it's knackered & lasts only like 2 minutes LOL

So, when i got home. i loaded my laptop up, everything worked perfect. i went on world of warcraft & everything. All fine.
Until i went to shut down.
Now this is the problem.

If i press the On/Off button to bring up the box that says Stand by, Turn off & restart... I get a mouse timer, & Explorer all fails. (Explorer.exe)
so i have to end that task..

If i go to Start then click "Turn off computer"
I get mouse timer & all fails agen. & it stays like it forever. Until i either force the laptop off holding the button in or end explorer.exe

So for now, the only way i can turn this thing off is by forcing it off lmfao !
Other than that it works fine.
So please help, i know it's a bit of a random topic, i doubt you've come accross this problem before lmao.

For the time being, i'm gonna try system recovery to like 2 days ago or something.
& i'm gna see if i can install all the updates from the microsoft website.
I'll let you know if anything changes or whatever.
