Specs: Windows XP, amd64
I purchased a desktop through a person. It was working fine. While I was formatting the other partitions, accidentally I switched off the power.
Now it is crashed. Not booting. Any advice pl.
WinXP pro is on it. No disks supplied along with it.

If it will not boot into any of the options shown when you press F8 : Safemode, Last good config etc then recovery will require an XP install disk so you can do a repair install.

Since you were partitioning the drive when the power was cut off there is every likelihood the partitions & file structure are toast and a full drive wipe will be required.

In any event you need a bootable CD or floppy of some kind in order to at least examine the partition & file structure of the drive.

in the process of installation, it formatted the disk, copied the files, installation over. but at the time of rebooting, it says NT not detected. and hangs there.

Can you download and burn a new boot CD? Have a look at this one: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Use a disk diagnostic to check the drive for damage and then use one of the wipe tools followed by a new partitioning tool.

once it is 'unformatted or damaged' , do you think the suggested exercise will come to any rescue? I mean, can I get back the lost OS?

Your drive can write CDR & CDRW disks. Can't write anything to DVD media.
