pc shuts down after a few minutes

Specs: Windows xp, 1.GB Ddr 400
when i try to install new windows,my pc just shuts down before the installation can start.or just running for a few seconds hen shuts down. pls help

It sounds like it's over heating. Check both fans.

Why are you trying to install 'new windows'? It sounds like you have a hardware problem, probably overheating as stated by guapo.

Check the BIOS settings.
Set ACPI Aware OS to Yes, and Power Management to "Enabled".

Check your system fan because generally this happens due to overheating problem.... sometimes this problem may appear due to problem in motherboard.
