Safest way now to recover the data is to Slave your HD to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy dad's stuff ( don't forget your emails & address book ) onto the other HD or other media.
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.

Do that 1st, see how you go & then we can think about trying to fix the boot problem.

I fogot to ask.....could I in safe mode backup my dad's programs and the rest of his data on flash drives?
I was thinking if the computer would stay on enough to do this...then I just do a recovery without worrying if it will delete all his programs and data.

"could I in safe mode backup my dad's programs and the rest of his data on flash drives?"

At this stage I have no idea what is going on with the computer, give it a try.

if you can get into safe mode can you undo the last restore or start in last known good config or even restore to an earlier point?
