PC freezing briefly at XP splash screen

November 15, 2011 at 06:55:55
Specs: Windows XP 32-bit, 3.2GHz AMD 955 black editon - 2 X 2 GB RAM
When booting up my PC sits at the XP splash screen for about 3 min before booting into windows, every time. I've tried everything, I have 2 2GB ram sticks which I swapped round and tried each individually in different slots, memtest, prime95, Nvidia GPU stability test, HDAT2 HDD test to repair any bad sectors (of which there were none) & sfc /scannow. Most recentley I disabled the splash screen, 1st i put a tick in the noguiboot box in msconfig, this resulted in a black screen when the splash screen should have appeared which stayed there as long as the splash screen used to freeze for. 2nd I unticked that box and edited the boot.ini file to have /SOS after /fastdetect which, upon reboot, resulted in a blue screen (not bsod) with white writing saying stuff like service pack 3 and multiprocessor and other stuff. That stayed there for about 2 min then it went to a black screen and said checking file system on C:, the volume is clean. windows has finished checking disk. And then windows boots up but if I remove the boot.ini edit then the original problem is back.
I don't really know where else to go with this, although it's not a major problem it is frustrating and I'd appreciate any help

I didn't see any reference to you having done a defrag of the system drive, have you done that?

Just now I used Ccleaner to fix 256 registry issues but still the problem persists. I'd be grateful for any suggestions, (apart from reinstalling XP if at all possible).

It would appear i stumped the internet then.
Well for anyone who cares, after my clean install it reverted to the original BIOS (F5) so I put F10 back on which solved the problem (again). I had previously done this and it fixed the problem for about a week but then the problem returned. It has been nearly a week now and the problem has not returned YET.
So I advise anyone experiencing a similar issue to do the same (as long as your system is stable the rest of the time, I have destroyed a laptop in the past because it blue screened mid flash, oops.)
