Specs: Windows XP
I have a dell dimension 2400 with xp pro. a few months ago I had to reinstall xp because it was all messed up from everyone using it, anyways I remember having to adjust something in bios when doing the install and now when i turn it on or restart it will do the splash screen for 20 seconds and then I get a black screen that says "primary drive not found" press F1 to continue. Then it loads windows and everything works fine from there, what should I do to fix this?

First, fit a new CMOS battery which powers the BIOS chip. It's usually a small button battery which clips on to the motherboard. Existing CMOS battery may be flat.

Next, go into BIOS Setup and make sure the system drive is configured as the first boot device (currently it may be set to CD-ROM first, and some systems don't like it being left like that after Windows has been installed).

Thanks for the tip, however it still takes me to the black screen that says: Primary Drive 1 not found. Strike F1 to continue or F2 to run setup utility and then everything works fine. I did replace the battery and I have noticed for a while now that the clock has been several minutes faster than the atomic clock and I tried syncing them but then it is off again, so i wonder if that was with the battery as well? I am sure I screwed something up in the bios when I had to reinstall the OS, any other advise is greatly appreciated!

✔ Best Answer
go into the bios and try to find the setting to enable the "default settings". Not the ideal setting for a pc but, with a pc that old its not going to make a big difference in performance and might fix the problem. Post back the result.
