Partition spilt after installing XP

Specs: Windows XP
I have a gateway dx4200-09 desktop that came with windows vista. The system basically crashed do to a faulty driver and I believe so fun malware too. I removed the malware and to fix the driver problem I installed XP. However I think I screwed something up because the partition spilt and now says OS (C) and local drive (D). The OS has 516 GB free and the local disk only has only 10GB total and only 9.5MB left. So basically I can't install any programs or let save anything because the drive basically full. When I right click on "d" it does not give me the option of expanding the drive and I don't want to buy a "partition magic" program.

Under disk management it states D is the logical drive and the extended partition and C is the primary partition. Disk 0 says Basic 596.16GB online.

Any clue how to figure this out without buying software or having to reformat my drive all over again?

The 10 GB drive was your PQSERVICE a recovery partition. You may need a bootable partition program on CD and maybe you can go in and make the D the active partition and maybe it will boot into the recovery if you are lucky.

Just because the OP does not come back in 3 or 4 days to reply, does not mean he will not come back and reply.
