Outlook freezes but then works

Microsoft Outlook 2003 (full product)
July 2, 2010 at 07:52:40
Specs: Windows XP
This is driving me nuts and I've tried several fixes suggested on forums but nothing has worked.

When I open Outlook it opens fine and then when it starts downloading, freezes. In Task manager it flops to Not Responding and though there is no discernable spike CPU usage my computer is basically frozen ...then after about 30 seconds to a minute it starts responding and downloading emai.

Then it freezes and goes unresponsive again taking then entire machine with it.

Then unfreezes and downloads...but it is always so sloooooow. It take a good five minutes to overload the overnight email - about 15 to 30 items with no major attachments.

then during the day when ever I get an email my machine freezes and for a few seconds after I get the emails I still can't do anything in any other program.....

Any suggestions I haven't tried????

It could also be with you ISP. What is you Internet Speed? Please do a...

"doesn't happen BTW on my laptop"

Are you using wireless? If so then chances are you are getting a poor wireless signal. Go into your router and change the channel to channel 9 and see if it makes a difference. Also, what did Speedtest.net show as your actual speed?

But speed test shows what it always shows for my wired connection.....full power which in this case is 10 mbps down and 1 up....I have Net Magic and Speed Test is built in so I often check the speeds and compare against my ISP's speed check.....so no on the wireless question....in fact my Laptop usually connects wirelessly which puts the sword to that theory!

On other forums this issue comes up a lot, right through Outlook 2007 and now 2010. There is some discussion of Add ins but I can't find the panel to check whether I even have any add ins going.

Other fixes tried and not worked....archiving, deleting junk mail, deleting the deleted folder....and so on.

Its really annoying.....you're in the middle of writing something and then suddenly text stops flowing and nothing works until Outlook has received and digested email.
The worst is on start up....it seizes control of the machine even those Task Manager shows system idle at 98%

Well...no one?????

Well can anyone recommend a mailer other than Outlook?

I am sick and tired of Outlook taking eight minutes to get the first round of emails in the morning, to freeze up and take control of my computer while sending or receiving mail all the while showing only system idle is at 98%...it's not like something is seizing control of my CPU power...it's just outlook is another piece of crap from Microsoft.

I need a mail program which will handle multiple accounts, let me run my calendar and synch with my smart phone.

I have a Dell Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz/8GBRAM Windows 7 Pro Ultimate 64-bit, Office 2010 Pro and Norton Antivirus installed on my computer.

My outlook kept freezing up for 3-5 minutes and sometimes even lock up when I tried to reply to all and forward emails. Same thing if I created a calendar item. For the past few months, I just dealt with the problem because I like many of the new features in Outlook 2010 and didn’t want to revert back to 2007 since I know I didn’t have these issues with 07.

Of course I uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook, rebooted, started in safe mode, etc. (all the basic stuff) with no success. I even went as far formatting and reloading the OS (Win7 Pro 64-bit) and starting clean just in case a corrupted file wasn’t being replaced. No luck. Same issue. Then this morning I thought I would remove my virus protection (Norton Security Suite 4.0 from Comcast) and try McAfee. After removing Norton, Outlook 2010 worked perfect! No issues! Apparently there was something in Norton that was causing Outlook to freeze up.

I know there are a lot of people having issues and I’ve been on many forums where there isn’t a solution so many people are waiting for SP1 for Outlook 2010 (office 2010) for a solution.

Hey Mate,

I seem to to having similar problems, but my outlook will freeze for like 3-5 secs then respond for the same time then freeze again, so on and son on .
Very annoying as u go to click on something and its frozen, then its not, OMG!!

I am runing windows 7 ultimate 64bit and outlook 2010.

Found the problem for me :)

It was the Trend micro toolbar in the ADD-ONS of outlook .

There must be some compatability issue there somewhere, since i have disabled it it runs smooth as now with no freezing.

Hope this helps,

Same problem here with Outlook 2007 and Firefox both latest versions it's definitely a conflict between these programs and I can't find anything which explains what it could be. Don't really want to get rid of all my FF add-ons and I don't think they are causing it anyway. When I load Outlook it takes forever to download emails and in the process FF freezes and can only be unfrozen by restarting the PC and after 'nsappshell' message appears during closedown. Grrrrrr! :(
