Only a blinking cursor at startup (Dell D800)

November 10, 2010 at 08:03:08
Specs: Windows XP, 1024
When I start-up a Dell800 I inherited it will only go to a blinking cursor in the left hand corner. I have tried using the F2, F8 & F12 function keys to get into set-up mode, but it ignores me. I have put a hard disk from a known working Dell D800 in and it still won't boot. I have tried removing the CMOS battery to lose any possible corrupt data, but still nothing. I have looked on several forums but I cannot see anything failing this early in the start-up sequence.

I don't know if it is a hardware or software problem, but I suspect software/firmware. Can anyone help please?

blinking cursor in the left hand corner = no master boot record

First step to correct is boot into recovery console and run the utilities fixboot and fixmbr.

If still no go the next step is a repair install.
