Specs: Windows XP
I was victim of a ransome attempt...and made the big mistake of telling them to "go forth and propogate". Now I have a LT that I can't use because I can't get online...I have or had XP sp3 on it. Now when I find a copy Windows tells me I need to do a clean install. I have enough horses to run 10 but can't get along with all the new rules.I;m 80 yrs old too old and cranky to learn any new tricks. I found the copy I need but to download it I need to join Facebook....no chance of that happening..and I can't figure out how to get a copy..I just need to send the fiends l
have left a few notes and jokes. Please don't send anything too technical it would be a waste of time...forever for me might be tomorrow noon.
But I will appreciate any help I can get.
Regards John

We can't send you anything but links - this board does not support attachments. You don't even need a link, find XP on eBay and send them your money.

Telling them to go forth and propagate did nothing, they didn't even hear it and they were never going to send you the magic key to unlock your box anyway because it doesn't exist in the first place. Only the one way trip of the money would work and it would have been better spent throwing it down a rabbit hole - at least the rabbit could use it for insulation.

When you do get XP reinstalled, install Service Pack 3 for XP and only then can you install the ransomware security update for XP issued by MS in May of this year.

Why would you go thru the hassle of reinstalling Windows? Why not just remove the infection(s)? You can obviously get online or you wouldn't be able to post, so you should be able to download a couple of programs that will get rid of ransomware. Do you have a USB flash drive you can use? Download the following 3 programs (all are free) & place them on the flash drive. Then boot into Windows & install the programs on the infected computer. If you have problems booting into Windows, tap the F8 key during startup & select Safe Mode. Once you're in Safe Mode, run the programs.

Junkware Removal Tool (JRT): https://www.malwarebytes.com/junkwa...
AdwCleaner: https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcle...
MalwareBytes: https://www.malwarebytes.com/premium/

I also recommend installing & running CCleaner-Slim. Run both the cleaner & registry scanner...remove everything they find. You can also use CCleaner to uninstall programs & disable unnecessary startup programs. Be sure to download the "Slim" version.

When you nstall "anything" downloaded off the web, including all the utilities mentioned by riider, use the manual or custom installtion method, Do not use the default, proffered automatic. Watch for and uncheck all pre checked boxes, other tthan the one for actual utlity itself, That way you will avoid instaaling all manner of junk, changes to your operating system etc.; much of which is a pain to remove...

@riider Just because he was able to post doesn't mean he can get online with that LT. He could have used a different LT or another device.
