after windows update office, word, excel ect will not open I think I need to remove an update but which one ???
Been a while since I used WinXP. That said, the following instructions should be about the same as Windows 10. Go to Control Panel> Programs and Features> View installed updates. Then look for updates related to Office and in the time frame that corresponds with Office 10 stopped working. Remove the updates that fit. If that doesn't work then remove Windows updates that fit the time frame. I suggest you write down the name/s and KB number of any updates you remove. You can in the future elect to NOT install that particular update.
All that said, I have run older versions of Office on WP, Win7, and Win10.
Your desktop link may be the only reason Office is no opening, If in fact it isn't. Are you sure Office is not opening minimized in the tray? Try finding the exe file under the installation files and run Word or Excel from that exe.
Run the Repair function. https://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.p...

Do you have the 64 Bit version of Office or the 32 bit version?
