nu.exe uses 100 % cpu

Specs: Windows XP, Intel 2.4 1Gb RAM
a procees called nu.exe appears to be using 100% of CPu and the PC is so slow as to be unusable.

Any clues please

That definitely sounds like Norton to me--slow to the point of almost unusability on computers that have 256 MB RAM, or that on faster machines, with a dual core and 1 GB of RAM, slow them down considerably.

"nu.exe" is a process which is part of Norton Utilities, which does use a considerable amount of Windows' resources to run. Either turn services from Norton Utilities off, upgrade your computer's memory to at least 512 MB, or disable Norton Utilities.

My recommendation is to switch to McAfee, which runs halfway decently, or Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free and can be downloaded here:

agreimann is correct it is a Norton Utilities 14 process, but is listed as a symantec process. If its using such high CPU it might need to be updated to a newer version. Or as suggested by agreimann remove it. There are loads of programs that won't hog your CPU.
